From Cliff Trow:
The Corvallis City Council unanimously approved a 5% telecommunications service tax on gross revenues earned by all phone companies from service addresses located within the Corvallis city limits. This tax will apply equally to all providers of telecommunications services such as wireless, internet phone and landline phone services. The services it applies to include local and long distance calls, forwarding, voice mail, text messaging and called ID. It does not apply to any internet services except internet phone services. Under state and federal laws the phone companies may choose to pass all or part of their tax obligations to their customers.
Democrats should support the City Council's decision because the need is real, the fee is fair in that it treats all phone companies equally and the benefits to our community are worth it. Should this measure fail, other options will have to be found to fund the essential public safety services or cuts will have to be made in other important programs. We urge that you vote yes for safety, yes for fairness, yes for savings. Vote Yes on 02-54.
