1. ACTION NEEDED
The month of August is CANVASSING time. It’s fun to get out into the neighborhoods and spread the word about our candidates. Please note the individual campaigns’ volunteer needs below, and put on your walking shoes.
2. ANNOUNCEMENTS
---- You are invited to take part in the HIROSHIMA MEMORIAL, which includes beautiful folding crane and calligraphy exhibits presented at Footwise (beginning July 24) and at the Corvallis/Benton County Library (beginning August 1). Contact Jeanne Raymond, or Aleita Hass-Holcombe. Watch for more information about the program in the local media.
---- In an effort to “break down barriers†PAUL EVANS’ campaign is enlisting his military colleagues to canvass throughout Senate District 10. Eric Firkin (USAF Retired) is the second veteran who served with Paul overseas to give his time generously to the campaign. The first was Don Wahonick, and Jayson Murgurtio will be here on July 29.
---- Corvallis peace seekers join others across the globe by participating in TROOPS HOME FAST, a hunger strike that began on the 4th of July and will continue until Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace. The goal is to have at least one person fasting every day, and to maintain a public presence from 10 am to 7 pm every day in front of the Benton County Courthouse. Pledge to fast for one day, once a week, several days in a row, or whatever works for you. Email or stop by the table to sign up.
---- Lost and Found: Missing a notebook left after the last BCDems regular monthly meeting? You may retrieve it from the Grace Lutheran office during business hours (8-4:30).

---- DAILY VIGIL protesting the war in Iraq, 5-6 pm in front of the Courthouse on 4th Street. Democrats gather there on Wednesday each week.
---- July 15, Saturday, 1-9:00 pm: SQUANTUM WHIFFLE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL, a big party thrown by our neighbors, the Polk County Dems. Bands, food and wine, and a silent auction. $12 donation requested. No charge for kids 10 and under.
---- July 15/16, Saturday/Sunday: The Oregon Bus Project COAST TRIP: Let’s head to Newport on Saturday afternoon to meet the Bus and canvass for Jean Cowan, candidate in House District 10 on the central Oregon coast. Contact Kriste York for more information.
---- July 19, Wednesday, 7:00 pm: Jesse Bontecou, Field Representative for Linn Co., will be conducting a newly developed PRECINCT PERSON TRAINING for LC Dems and for any BCDems who would like to join us and participate. Meet at the Old Armory Building at the SW corner of 4th and Lyons in downtown Albany. Contact John Puma for more information.
---- July 20, Thursday, 7:00 pm: BCDEMS’ REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING. Grace Lutheran Church, Harrison and Kings, Corvallis. Doors open at 6:30; business begins at 7:00 pm. We will talk about the Neighbor-to-Neighbor reunion day program. All precinct committee people are especially encouraged to attend this meeting.

Join other Benton County Democrats at The Dark Side Cinema to view Al Gore’s documentary about global warming. Food for thought may be followed by food for eating, and maybe deconstructing the film over pizza and beer. Meet at The Dark Side. You never know what will happen next.
---- July 25, Tuesday, time TBA: VETERANS FOR PEACE AND SUSTAINABILITY RIDE. Corvallis will be the first stop for a group of veterans who are bicycling their way to the Veterans for Peace national convention in Seattle. They will host a public potluck and forum about sustainability and the ties between the environment and violence. Everyone is welcome. Contact Leah Bolger for more information.

4. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
• Campaign Activities….
---- State Rep. SARA GELSER’S campaign (House District 16) will conduct the GIANT GELSER CANVASS from 1-4:00 pm, Sunday, October 22, followed by food, fun, and relaxation. Also, there will be several other fall canvasses for her campaign, and she is seeking volunteers.
---- SARA’s campaign is planning a mailing party in late August (TBA). They are looking for volunteers that like to stamp, stuff, and chat. If you are interested in helping with any mailing, or if you can walk with Sara anytime this fall, please contact her campaign.
---- DIANA SIMPSON’s campaign (Benton County Sheriff) has scheduled several canvassing days this month: July 19, 25th, and 26th (evenings). Diana has made a commitment to “push hard to assure voters†about her candidacy. Come and help her team get the word out about her. Contact Clinton Downs.
---- MARIO E. MAGAÑA (Senate District 8) will be canvassing as part of NATIONAL REUNION DAY on July 29. This will be a fun day for all Democrats, and Mario will help us mark 100 days until the next election. If you can walk with Mario, contact Jason Queen. Also, watch next month’s HotLines for word about Magaña house parties during the first part of August.

---- WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO STAFF THE OFFICE. Our hours of operation will depend on how many volunteers are able to help. We would like to be open Monday-Friday from 10 am-2 pm and from 4 pm-8-pm. If you can give a little time each week, please contact William Switzer.
• Fundraising Committee Needs….
---- The BCDems are going into the merchandising business. Want to run the show? We need someone to work with our local supplier, take orders, distribute product, set up for sales at local events (with your dedicated sales staff) and keep the HQ well stocked. You’ll bring in some funds…and circulate the Democrats’good name. Email Fundraising Chair Todd Barnhart or phone him at 754-0196.

---- Want to help us pull together paid ads from local businesses for the monthly mailed newsletter? We’ve figured out how we want to go about this, and now we need someone to coordinate this little project. If you’re willing to spend a few hours a monthâ€â€and a few more to get it off the groundâ€â€please email Davi Richards or phone her at 745-3866.

---- It’s almost time for the BCDems’ FAIR BOOTH. We need people to help set up on TUESDAY, August 1 and to tear down on MONDAY, August 7th. The volunteer staff time slots each day are noon-4 pm; 4:00-8 pm; and 8:00-10 pm. Please email William Switzer or phone him at 541-990-3731 to sign up to help.
